Hope Jahren is an award-winning geobiologist who was voted by Time magazine as one of the world’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2016. This is a wonderful book which charts her growing interest in science as a little girl playing for hours in her father’s laboratory through to running her own research facility in Hawaii today. Not only is she an extraordinary scientist but Hope is also a gifted writer. You’ll find yourself laughing out loud, and crying on more than one occasion, as you share her ups and downs and meet her friends and colleagues, particularly Bill, her steadfast and eccentric associate in the lab.
Throughout the book, Hope champions the plant world, tracing the life of a tree from seed to full grown maturity in a clever parallel story to her own. She is deeply concerned about the future of the planet and the rate at which the natural environment is being destroyed.
This would be an inspirational read for anyone contemplating a future in science and gives an insight into the passion and determination needed to make a success of it, particularly if you are a woman paving your way through male-dominated academia.
