The story engages from the start with newspaper articles pointing to an entertaining missing persons mystery. We meet the heroines of the story, Iolanthe (Lanny) Green, a successful actress, star of the Galaxy Theatre in London’s West End and her young dresser, Anna Treadway. The setting is Soho, 1965, at the heart of London in the Swinging Sixties. Lanny’s disappearance is completely out of character and Anna is determined to find out what has happened to her friend. In the course of her investigating, Anna makes a new friend, has many eye-opening adventures and gets rather lost in the seamy side of respectable London society.
She encounters unexpected violence, prejudice, and a whole other world she had no idea existed, in the jazz clubs and back streets of Soho. Plus, of course, just being female in 1965, before the dawn of the contraceptive pill, could lead to all sorts of other dangers and difficulties.
All of the above is addressed with a light touch; it’s a great story, and would appeal to students in Year 11 and above.
