Lola is 12 years old and comes from an Italian family for whom horse-racing is everything.
Her Nonna fled from Italy after WW2 and settled close to the famous Aqueduct racetrack in New York. Lola jumps at the chance to escape the school bully and accompanies her Nonna back to Italy for the first time ever since she left. Mystery surrounds Nonna’s old life in the beautiful city of Siena and bit by bit her story comes out. Siena is famous for the Palio, a terrifying bareback horse race which takes place around the piazza once a year. The honour of each of the participating 17 contradas or districts is at stake and they will stop at absolutely nothing to win. Lola falls in love with a beautiful horse called Nico and by a twist of fate she is chosen to ride him in the great race just as her grandmother did 70 years ago. But will she be able to stand the pressure? And is Nico really the champion she believes him to be?
A truly delightful read.
