This is a super, super, book.
Quite unique, I’ve never read anything quite like it.
This is a mother child odyssey like no other. Alex, our thirteen year old, is totally used to lying awake through his parents arguments, but on this night he’s dragged out of bed and bundled into the car by his mother and their odyssey begins. Alex’s mother has a wild and crazy plan to revisit all the places and people in her life where there is unfinished business. That business might be retribution, forgiveness, or seeking lost friends. Criss-crossing the country over many months, during interminably long car trips, the secrets of his mother’s life are slowly revealed to Alex. He finds out who she was in ‘her life-before-me’ and the reader finds out who Alex truly is, and the gender bending dilemmas of his daily struggles.
This book is full of surprises; an amazingly different road trip story. Both Alex and his mother are engrossing characters and the questions about gender identity that are raised, are dealt with compassionately, and perfectly reflect the times we live in.
I highly recommend this novel for year 11 upwards.
