A delightful story for younger readers about the wrench of leaving all that you love and having to start again in a new land. Aref is from Oman and his parents have decided to complete their doctorate studies at Ann Arbor in Michigan. But Aref doesn’t want to go there. He’s going to miss Oman, and his friends and neighbours, his cat and above all Siddi, his beloved grandfather.
With just a week to go, Aref is dragging his heels and his suitcase lies empty. Luckily, with his gentle wisdom, Siddi is able to ease the pain of parting for them both and reassures Aref that he will return. They spend every precious hour they can together and create memories by visiting places special to them both.
Above all, this book highlights the beauty and culture of Oman - its delicious food, the neighbourly and courteous Omani people, the desert and extreme heat, the old days before the advent of electricity and development and the varied and wonderful wildlife including its turtles. It’s definitely a place I’d now like to visit!
