Student Poetry: An Anthology of Thoughts by Evee Tan

Tony Ellwood, In No Time #18, 2012

A series of three poems from Evee Tan, offering vivid images and dreamlike atmosphere.

Painting the sunset
A sunset paints my vision hazy
with violets painted blue.
Or rather;
I,
the artist,  first used a blue--
used the silence of my blue--
then coated twice over
with the violets of us two.
Then I coloured in
with a June’s day worth of yellow.
Painted over with a plentiful harvest
of orange tangerine.
I captured the wispy clouds,
then tied them to my painting.
Their tight embrace remains.
And lastly,
I ignited the skies
with heavenly rays piercing through.

of dreamers
you wide eyed dreamers,
with your heads tilted
towards the sky.
you, who contemplate the stars
and watch the days stretch into lovers.
you have a long term effect--
your foolish hearts just a young beginning.
you dip your words
in the plum coloured sea,
embracing the romance in the silence.

you reminisce on each syllable,
and in this moment

you are infinite.

A Warm Winter
There’s something… warm about winter. You know? There’s the heavy woolies, socks, jumpers, jackets and gloves that I retrieve from the depths of my closet and then pile it onto myself. And how could I forget, the beanies, the wool itching my head and covering me. After that, I run outside to find my friends for a snowball fight, our warm laughs fill the atmosphere before our ribs become tired. Then we make a snowman who is happy, even in the chilly air, his smile warm. We lie down, grinning from ear to ear; We can’t stop thinking about the hot chocolate in the large mugs that our parents will give us. Then there’s the roaring fire, reaching up the chimney in saturated reds and burnt blacks. Spiralling up, and up, towards the cold air, outside. I might just be imagining this, but winter, at least in my mind, is most definitely warm. I wouldn’t say it’s hot, but it’s warm, a comforting sort of warm.
